  • Description:Subject is an older woman seated facing three-quarter right on a red-upholstered, high-backed armchair. She is wearing a very dark dress with a white lace-edged collar, and her eyes are turned to look directly at the viewer. Her white bonnet has ruffles over the ears, a smooth top, and is fastened with a band under her chin. Her dark hair is barely visible at the front of the bonnet.
  • History:Portrait has come down through the Murfree family.
  • Notes:Subject was born July 19, 1757 and was the daughter of Matthias Brickell and Rachel de Noailles. Her grandfather, Reverend Matthias Bricknell, was an Episcopal Priest and was born in England. He came to North Carolina in 1724. Subject married Col. Hardy Murfree.
