History:The painting is a frame that contains seven oval portraits, each 13 X 11.50. There is incipient flaking and it needs cleaning. The mother is at the center and she is surrounded by her six children. No other example of this type of frame has been noted in Tennessee. The portrait is thought to have been painted after the mother's death. The artist had previously painted Mrs. Nelson.The portrait was donated by descendents.
Notes:Ann Elizabeth Start Nelson (1820-1850) was the first wife of T. A. R. Nelson, a prominent East Tennessee politician. The children are Alice, Anne, Alexander, Start, David, and Thomas.
