  • Description:Middle aged woman with her hands crossed right over left. She is wearing a black dress with full sleeves, wide white collar, and white bonnet. Her dark hair is parted in the middle and framed by her white bonnet tied under the right side of her chin. Ornate gold frame (not visible here) is original to portrait.
  • History:Donated to Travellers Rest by Mrs. Mary Snowden Treadwell Gee, Jr., great great grandaughter of the subject, in 1970. Restored in 1980.
  • Notes:Born in 1782 to General James White, founder of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Mary Lawson White. A widow with five children, she married Judge Overton in1820 and came to live at Travellers Rest. They had three children, John Overton, Jr. (Harriet Maxwell), Anne Coleman Overton (.Robert Brinkley of Memphis) and Cynthia Elizabeth Belle Overton (John Lea).
