  • Description:Waist-length forward view of an elderly woman with brown hair parted in the middle. She appears to be seated in a red chair and red drapes and pilaster or column are in the background. She is wearing a black dress with a small white collar. Her bonnet is tied under the left side of her chin.
  • History:Donated to Travellers Rest by daughters of Mrs. Sam Orr – Mrs. Robert H. Jordan (Mary Hamilton Thompson Orr, cc [Polly]) and Mrs. John H. Davis (Harriet Orr, CD)
  • Notes:Born in 1782 to General James White, founder of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Mary Lawson White. A widow with five children, she married Judge Overton in1820 and came to live at Travellers Rest. They had three children, John Overton, Jr. (Harriet Maxwell), Anne Coleman Overton (.Robert Brinkley of Memphis) and Cynthia Elizabeth Belle Overton (John Lea).
