  • Description:Older woman seated in a red chair is dress in a widow's costume of black dress, large gray collar, gray bonnet that is heavily ruffled around her face and tied under the chin with a black bow. Her hair is parted in the middle.
  • History:Donated to Travellers Rest by Lucien C. Simpson in 2000.
  • Notes:Born in 1782 to General James White, founder of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Mary Lawson White. A widow with five children, she married Judge Overton in1820 and came to live at Travellers Rest. They had three children, John Overton, Jr. (Harriet Maxwell), Anne Coleman Overton (.Robert Brinkley of Memphis) and Cynthia Elizabeth Belle Overton (John Lea).
