  • Notes: Governor Austin Peay was originally from Hopkinsville, Kentucky. He became governor from 1923 to 1927. He is often regarded as the governor who did more to reform state government than any other governor in the state’s history. Austin Peay is the only Tennessee governor to die in office. Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee is named for the governor.
