History:The portrait is a copy made by Nashville artist, Herbert Armstrong, from an original owned by Philip Hoyte Hicks, who donated the copy to Peabody College for Teachers in 1937. The original portrait was made by either Gilbert Stuart or Ralph E.W. Earle. The portrait now hangs in the Wyatt Center for Education on Vanderbilt's Peabody Campus.
Notes:Born in Morristown, NJ in 1786 of english ancestors, Philip Lindsley, graduated from the College of New Jersey, now known as Princeton. He became a tutor, a licensed preacher, and professor of languages and librarian. In 1817 he became an ordained minister, as well as vice president of Princeton. He later served as Princeton's acting president. He was persuaded to move to Nashville in 1824 to become the president of Cumberland College, the institutional link between Davidson Academy and the University of Nashville. He served in that capacity until 1850.
