  • Description:Three-quarter, right-facing man with a gold-topped cane in left hand. (He never went our without wearing gloves.) A red drapery column is visible behind him, and the frame matches that on his wife's portrait.
  • History:Copied by Sara Ward Conley from an original. Conley, an art teacher, lived on West End Avenue two doors from former Governor's mansion (now razed) and across from Vanderbilt University.
  • Notes:Subject was a congressman in Washington and was born December 22, 1802 in Readyville, VA and died June 4, 1875 in Murfreesboro, TN. He was married to Martha Alvoid Strong on May 19, 1825 in Knoxville, TN. (Vol. 2 p. 207 of marriage records)
