History:This portrait is thought to be a copy of a portrait painted by William Thruston Black. Cooper states in his account book that he began the "Black Robertson" on July 16, 1839. Its condition is considered fair with a horizontal scratch at lower right. There is paint missing at the tip of the subject's nose.
Notes:Felix Robertson (1781-1865) is known as the first white child born in the settlement that became Nashville. His parents, James and Charlotte Reeves Robertson, were among the first large group of settlers to migrate to the Middle Tennessee area. His father is known as the "Father of Tennessee' in some history books. Dr. Felix Robertson served three terms as mayor of Nashville. Felix delivered a speech at the 26th annual meeting of the Tennessee Medical Society detailing the early physicians and medical practices in the early settlement of Nashville. He is buried near his parents in the Nashville City Cemetery.
