The child's feet are in the stream. To the right is a pale tan spaniel lapping at the water. There is also a large tree trunk just behind the child. The painting is called Portrait of an Infrant with Dog.
Notes:The subject is thought to be Gertrude Shackelford who is listed as 6 years of age in the 1860 Federal census.
