  • Description:Bust of older man with short white hair curling away from his face. He has a half-smile, and he is looking directly forward, although his body is turned three-quarter right. He wears a black suit, white shirt, and black bow tie cinching the standup collar of the shirt.
  • History:Portrait handed down through family.
  • Notes:Israel Smith was born September 15, 1776 in Cutchess County, NY and died in 1853. He secured terminus of Erie Canal; was President and Co-Owner Pier Company; and established Albany Academy and Albany Female Academy. Mr. Smith introduced Lancastrian system of education. Organized Merchants Insurance Comapny of Albany and Canal Bank of Albany. Ruling Elder of 4th Presbyterian Church, which he helped establish. Also established 2nd Presbyterian Church. He is the Great-Great-Great-Grandfather of present owner.
