Description:Founder of Stanton, Tennessee, this painting of Joseph Blackwell Stanton has the original frame handmade by slaves on the Stanton Plantation.1 The Great Smoky Mountains are depicted outside the window behind the sitter.2 3 Subject is holding an early 1800s flute.
History:Owner's paternal great grandfather, Joseph Henry Ware of Stanton TN, was the beneficiary of JB Stanton's only daughter's estate. This painting was then given to his son, William Stanton Ware of Stanton TN, (1870-1947), then passed down to his son William Thomas Ware of Vancouver, Canada. This painting has been in owner's possession in Ottawa, Canada since his father, William Thomas Ware's, death in 1988.

Apparently early Eastern TN landscapes are fairly rare and even more so in Earl paintings, since he was busy with numerous commissions and just didn't have the time.
