  • History:Portrait was painted from a daguerrotype taken by S. W. Shaw which was photographed by Mr. C. C. Hughes and used by Cooper to paint this portrait.
  • Notes:William Strickland (1787-1854) was a native of PA and an architect, engineer and surveyor had built several churches and public buildings in his native state. During his 8 years in Nashville he designed and helped build the state capital, the Downtown Presbyterian Church, St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Polk monument, and several tombstones in the Nashville City Cemetery. He died before the completion of the State Capitol, his most notable work, and was entombed in the North Entrance Wall of that building.
