Description:Frame is leather covered case with gilded inner bezel; original. Waist-length rectangular of a slender, wiry young man with his head to his left. In black formal attire with a rectangular pin on his white shirt at breast-level. His hair is short, dark brown, and curly. His eyes are blue.
History:Painted in Salem, Mass. Backing paper inscribed: "Likeness of Joseph_________/Taken by Mrs. Livermore?Jany 1839, Aged 25 years" Another part of the paper says "....Symmonds, done at Salem when subject was 24 years and 10 months old." The face is painted again on the back of the See Groce and Wallace for Mrs. Livermore. She exhibited in Boston in 1846 and in NYC in 1847. Label in frame says "made at/Smith's/No 2, Milk St/Opposite Old South/Boston." The odd angle of Symmonds' head suggests that he may hbe had a hunchback or other defect. Exhibited at Gibbes 2000
