History:This is a double portrait of two boys. The younger boy has his arm around the older boy's shoulder. The older subject is wearing a black coat and tie with a white shirt. The younger subject is wearing a brown coat with an open white shirt. The frame is thought to be original to the portrait. The painting has been cleaned and faced with Japanese tissue. Paint losses have been inpainted. The portrait was handed down in the family and purchased by TSM in 1987.
Notes:Charles Holloway Dorian, Jr. and Willoughby C. Dorian were the sons of Charles and Hannah Dorian, a justice of the peace in Bolivar, Hardeman Co., TN. According to family tradition, Charles Jr. went to California during the Gold Rush but returned 20 months later. Later, he moved to Memphis and was involved in the cotton trade in that city. The younger boy, Willoughby never married and served in the Confederate Army. After the war, he returned to Bolivar and maintained a library at the family residence for local citizens.
