History:There is no apparent signature or date of execution on the painting. It is a very large full figure view of the standing subject who is dressed in a U.S. Army General's uniform of the Civil War period. It was purchased by the state in 1866 for $1000 "at the request of loyal citizens of the state and state officials." The portrait condition was considered good in 1980.
Notes:Born in Southhampton County, VA, Thomas served as held several positions in local courts until he attended West Point, graduating in 1840. He was promoted as Major General in April 1862, having adopted the Union side in the Civil War. He commanded the Union forces in occupied Nashville and commanded his troops against John Bell Hood during the Battle of Nashville, December 1864.
