Description:Three-quarter length right of girl sitting on a red sofa with a tassel holding a book in her right hand and strands of hair in her left hand. A crumpled green drape is in the upper right hand corner.
History:Subject died at the age of 17 in 1841, so this work may have been created post-humously. The work was restored by Ned Crouch of Clarksville in 1991. Retired Vanderbilt Professor of Art Hamilton Hazelhurst dated the work to the 1840s based on the subject's dress and jewelry. He also speculated that this was the work of an itinerant painter who painted in the head on a previously completed body and background.
