History:Charles McClung (1761-1835) figured prominently in Knoxville's history as the surveyor who laid out the original town plat in 1791, dividing part of James White's property in 64 lots. He surveyed many other parcels, including the route of Kingston Pike to the west of the original town, served as the Southwest Territory's first clerk of court, and was a member of the 1796 state constitution convention. He married James White's daughter Margaret, and they founded a family of successful merchants and businessmen.
