Description:Seated three-quarter left profile of a mature man in a black suit, white shirt, and black neck scarf. His hair is straight, combed back, wispy, silvery, and falls just below his ears. The bottom of his jaw is slightly offset to his left. His left hand is visible, and the corner of the chair, an intense red, is visible on the right side of the frame.
History:The work is unsigned, so it is not certain if the Cooper attribution is correct. It was painted at Weakley's home, Lockeland (see below). The work was restored by Cumberland Conservation in the 1990s.
Notes:Subject was Speaker Pro Tem of the TN House of Representatives. He was a surveyor who was paid in land. Weakley County was named for him but he never lived there. His home was in East Nashville, named Lockeland after his wife, Jane Locke of North Carolina. Subject lived July 2, 1764-February 4, 1845. He once owned what is now known as Shelby Park.
