  • Description:Seated waist-length portrait of subject facing three-quarter left with head turned slightly to look directly at the viewer. He has dark hair and full beard with no moustache, and he is wearing a dark coat over a white shirt and banded black tie over his stand-up collar, which slightly covers the beard. His left arm appears to be resting on a chair arm or table with his relaxed left hand falling over the edge, and his right hand, which is only partially visible, rests on his lap.
  • History:Portrait has come down through the Wendel-Miller-Haynes families and is now in a private home.
  • Notes:David Deaderick Wendel, son of David Wendel and Sarah Hale Neilson, married Sarah Jane Keeble on December 20, 1837. Subject was born at Cheeks Cross Road, Tennessee on February 4, 1811, moved to Murfreesboro with his parents in August of 1817, and graduated University of Nashville in 1831. He was a merchant in Lexington, Tennessee then returned to Murfreesboro in 1836 where he devoted himself to farming until 1846 when he became Circuit Court Clerk and later Clerk of the Chancery Court. At the time of his death he was cashier of the Stones River National Bank. For 32 years he was a ruling elder of the Murfreesboro Presbyterian Church. His seven children with Sarah Jane Keeble are listed with her portrait.
