History:The image is the typescript of Eliza Caroline's letter to her son, Dr. Aaron C. White, in which she gives him instructions about daguerreotypes of his late brother, Dr. George Wharton White. Willie is the older of Dr. George's two sons, who was captured at Fort Donelson and died at Camp Douglas in Chicago. Within less than three years, Dr. George died, then his oldest/teenage daughter, then his wife, then his youngest daughter (of diptheria), then Willie. A family of two parents and six children was rapidly reduced to three orphans, the oldest of whom was original owner's great-grandmother. The portrait has remained in the family.
Notes:Inherited by great-granddaughter Carolyn Williams Vickers. Son of General William White III and Mrs. Wlhite (Eliza Caroline Wharton). General White fought with Andrew Jackson in Creek campaign in Alabama and in Battle of New Orleans. Subject graduate of University of Nashville and studied medicine at Louisville, Kentucky and University of Pennsylvania. Married Margaret Louisa Word in 1842.
