Description:Elderly man with thin receding hair that hangs over his ears. Three-quarter left, bust-length profile. He is wearing a black coat and tie with a white shirt.
History:Donated to Travellers Rest by James M. White in 1957.
Notes:Born in 1773 to Genl James White, founder of Knoxville and Mary Lawson White. He was the second of nine children born to the Whites. His sister Mary McConnell married Judge John Overton of Nashville. In his Will, Judge Overton named White as guardian of his three children. He was married to Elizabeth Carrick and they were the parents of eleven children.White was U.S. Senator from Tennessee and candidate for president in 1836. His candidacy split the Democratic party in Tennessee and gave birth to the Whig party in Tennessee He died in 1840 at the age pf 67.
