Description:Frame is period gilded and black painted wood. Rectangular of young woman with straight, fine light brown hair combed predominantly to her right and cut above the ear. She is wearing a navy blue dress with a white ruffled collar. The chain of a necklace spills forward but the pendant is not visible.
History:Card on back has written on it "Painted by John W. Dodge/ of New York City/ November 24, 1840/ Nashville, Tennessee/Likeness of Mrs. Whitlock." Mr. Whitlock rented to Dodge his painting room and this miniature was painted in payment of rent (per Dodge's account book). Exhibited Gibbes 2000. llus. Tennessee Historical Quarterly, Spring 2000
