  • Description:Full length portrait of William H. Vanderbilt with his left hand on his hip and his right hand holding a cane. A balding man with full mutton chops is dressed in a black suit with white shirt and black tie.
  • History:This portrait is very likey a copy made by the artist himself of an original made in 1870 and is owned by the Penn Central (railroad) Company. Another copy is held by the Vanderbilt Museum in Suffolk County, New York. Vanderbilt University very likely received the portrait as a gift from Mrs. Vanderbilt following Mr. Vanderbilt's death.
  • Notes:The only living son following his father's (Cornelius Vanderbilt) death, William Henry not only inherited the majority of his father's wealth, but also the stewardship of the New York Central Railroad,
